MIT Media Lab researchers measured this directly. Across four months of EEG tracking, participants who used ChatGPT to write essays showed the weakest brain connectivity of all groups, while those working from memory alone showed the strongest. When LLM users were later switched to the brain-only condition, their neural engagement was still measurably lower than people who had never used AI. The researchers called it cognitive debt. It accumulates quietly, and it shows up on a scan.
AI doesn't automate one function. It automates language, analysis, creative reasoning, persuasion, decision-making. Those are not peripheral capacities.
